Let's face it ladies, we all know that the little black dress has a long reputation as the go-to date night look for oh-so many reasons. Wearing black makes us look more slender, it adds sophistication, and come on, it's really easy to wear. No worry about food stains or spilled wine!
But, as we age, the hunt for the little black dress that works on our ever changing bodies seems to get harder and harder to find. For instance, that same skin tight, bodycon dress that I wore 15 years ago just doesn't feel right on me now. I want something that is flattering, yet sophisticated. Age appropriate, yet youthful. See what I mean.....harder and harder. But, I believe I'm solved the problem. Separates!
Take this linen wrap skirt for instance, from Cuyana. It's sleek and sexy without being too, well, you know. Depending on how you tie it, you can show just a hint of leg or go all in and have your Angelina Jolie moment! For a more budget friendly version, try this one.
I've paired it with my fav linen babydoll cami from Express. I know , I know....you're saying "That cami AGAIN Lisa?" but this one is SOO good for the summer. Perfect on it's own, or a fantastic layering piece, it works with anything.
To take your look up a notch you can add some drama with a well flung black blazer. Also good to throw on inside those well air conditioned restaurants in the middle of summer, a basic, black blazer adds that special sense of flair without taking anything away from your outfit. Here, I've also added a statement necklace to help balance all the black and bring some interest to my neckline.
And of course, you'll want to add that statement bag. A boy bag from Chanel works fantastically here, but any budget friendly version will do perfectly like Here or Here.
When wearing head to toe black, I like to keep the shoes simple. This clear pair from Express works well because they simply disappear on you and make your legs look a mile long. And we could all use a little more of that, am I right?!
There is no reason why as we age, that we need to shy away from wearing things that we've come to love over the years, but we may need to make a few adjustments. Going with seperates in place of that Little Black Dress is one adjustment I'm that I'm a-okay with making.
Cheers! XOXO
